The tradition of fishing is one of the tourist attractions that has lasted the longest in Orihuela Costa. Its exceptional beaches and cliffs have allowed, since time immemorial, the recreational, competitive, or professional practice of this activity.

This activity has experienced significant growth in recent years, and continues to increase. For this reason, it is highly important to improve dissemination, knowledge, and information for those interested and for society in general, in order to achieve an adequate and sustainable development of this activity, preserving fishing resources and the biodiversity of our waters.

On our beaches or breakwaters, it is common to see, at the end of the day, many enthusiasts practicing recreational sea fishing, which is carried out for entertainment, without profit, and is divided into several categories:

  • From shore. Practiced on foot from the coastline.
  • From a boat. Practiced from vessels suitable for this activity and registered on the corresponding list in the Official Ship Registry.
  • Spearfishing. Practiced while free-diving, without using any device that allows underwater breathing, nor any mechanical means of propulsion.

The activity of Recreational Sea Fishing is regulated by a series of rules that mainly determine the types of fishing, tools and equipment permitted, closed seasons and restricted areas, authorised species, and maximum catch limits.

When this activity goes beyond simple leisure or hobby and enters the sports field, it begins to be managed by the different fishing federations, both at regional and national level, which organise competitions, championships, and activities of all levels.

In the professional field, it is still possible to see in the marinas of Orihuela Costa some boats that used to be dedicated to fishing, and which sold their products in the different fish markets of coastal towns. However, today these ports increasingly host recreational and leisure vessels.

Regardless of the purpose for which it is practiced, a fishing permit is always required, and you must have it prior to engaging in this activity, as it may be requested by the coastal civil guard or SEPRONA in any of its modalities.
